Footballs were originally inflated with the bladders of swine. These bladders were placed inside a leather cover, giving rise to the term “pigskin". All modern NFL footballs are made from cowhide with a vulcanized rubber bladder.
NFL footballs have 16 lace holes, but only 1 lace.
